Abstract
RESUMEN: Las aleaciones de hierro y aluminio, así como los aceros de hierro – aluminio – manganeso, se han conocido por largo tiempo gracias a sus extraordinarias propiedades físicas y químicas, pero también se sabe de las limitaciones en sus propiedades mecánicas –por diversas razones– que restringen su utilización. Esto se ha superado en algunos casos por medio de procesamientos que hacen costosos estos materiales. Pero, recientemente, se ha desarrollado un nuevo acero de hierro y aluminio donde parte del manganeso ha sido sustituida por níquel – lo cual permite otros procesos de endurecimiento – y se ha logrado así un material muy promisorio, sobre el cual se debería trabajar en nuestro medio y por ello se hace esta revisión, con el objeto de que los interesados empiecen a aproximarse a este tema.\n\nComo ya se indicó, estas aleaciones se han estudiado por sus propiedades magnéticas, porque su densidad es más baja que la de muchos aceros inoxidables, debido a su gran contenido de aluminio, por su excepcional resistencia a la oxidación y su buena resistencia a la corrosión en algunos medios acuosos. Además tienen una elevada resistencia eléctrica (50-100% mayor que la de los materiales usados como resistencias disponibles comercialmente) la cual se incrementa con la temperatura y además es fundamental el bajo costo del material, debido a que se usan elementos muy abundantes en la tierra, como el hierro y el aluminio. Todo lo cual se revisará brevemente.
