Abstract
Jacques Cartier (1491-1557) rapporte, dans la Relation du deuxième voyage qu’il fit au Canada en 1535-1536, que son équipage aurait été guéri d’une « grosse maladie» (le scorbut) ainsi que d’autres maladies, dont un cas de « grosse verolle » (syphilis), grâce à des tisanes faites avec les feuilles d’un arbre appelé annedda, et cela en six jours. Jusqu’ici, les recherches sur l’épisode de l’ annedda dans le récit du deuxième voyage de Cartier ont porté essentiellement sur la nature de cette « grosse maladie », sur l’identification de la plante appelée annedda, ainsi que sur ses possibles vertus thérapeutiques. Celle-ci veut montrer la nécessité de prendre en considération le contexte, en Europe au tournant du XVIe siècle, pour comprendre la teneur du message de Cartier dans cet épisode. On verra notamment comment l’imaginaire à l’égard du Nouveau Monde ainsi que le contexte médical de l’époque, et notamment la grave épidémie de syphilis qui sévissait alors en Europe, ont pu influencer Cartier dans le récit qu’il fit au roi de ce voyage.
