La Métamorphose de Kafka est un récit emblématique de la littérature grotesque. C’est aussi l’un des récits kafkaïens à avoir été le plus adapté au théâtre. Cet article se propose d’examiner les liens entre la facture grotesque du texte et sa théâtralité, au sens à la fois de son potentiel théâtral et de la réalité de son passage à la scène. En tant que catégorie de l’indéterminé, le grotesque produit une esthétique qui opère par l’hybridité et invite à l’hybridation. L’hypothèse défendue est que la structure grotesque de La Métamorphose prédispose le texte à la mise en scène, comme art de l’hybride par excellence. À cette fin, les aspects grotesques du récit (l’hybridité des corps et des espaces) sont étudiés en regard de la manière dont ils ont été lus, interprétés et traduits pour le théâtre, en 2016 et 2022, par Jan-Christoph Gockel et Stef Lernous. Ces deux metteurs en scène ne se contentent pas d’adapter l’histoire d’une créature se métamorphosant, mais ils proposent de véritables spectacles grotesques, structurés par l’hybridité.
