Abstract
Cyril Dabydeen has lived in Canada for over three decades and is known as a very prolific writer: he has published numerous books of poetry, the most recent one being Discussing Columbus (Peepal Tree Press, 1997), as well as collections of short stories (Black Jesus and Other Stories, Berbice Crossing…). He has written novels (Dark Swirl and Wizard Swami) as well as young adult fiction (Sometimes Hard) and has also been highly praised for editing anthologies: A Shapely Fire: Changing the Literary Landscape and Another Way to Dance. Cyril Dabydeen has been involved in human rights and race relations for years on the Ottawa and Canadian scene. He currently teaches English at the University of Ottawa. In March 2000, he was a juror for the Neustadt International Prize for Literature (University of Oklahoma), and in October 2000, he was a juror for Canada’s Governor General Award for Literature (poetry). He was the Poet Laureate of Ottawa from 1984 to 1987, and in October 2000 the City honoured him with the first Award of Excellence in Writing and Publishing.My Brahmin Days (TSAR publications, Toronto, 2000) is the latest collection of short stories published by the Ottawa-based Guyanese-Canadian writer. Cyril Dabydeen has already read from it several times, at the National Library of Canada launch and at the Canadian Association for American Studies Conference in Ottawa, among others.
