Abstract
Na przełomie XIX i XX w. Stany Zjednoczone ewoluowały w kierunku społeczeństwa nowoczesnego, porzucając część tradycyjnych zasad wiktoriańskich. Nowy sposób myślenia, akcentujący równość społeczną, pluralizm czy prorozwojową rolę nauki, znajdował odzwierciedlanie w różnych obszarach życia, w tym także praktykach kolekcjonerskich i podejściu do udostępniania dzieł sztuki. Celem niniejszego artykułu jest analiza losów kolekcji i Fundacji Barnesa – amerykańskiego naukowca, przedsiębiorcy i kolekcjonera – i wskazanie relacji między jego działaniami a wartościami typowymi dla początku XX w. Na ich przecięciu doszło do wykształcenia nowoczesnej instytucji kultury spełniającej innowacyjne funkcje społeczne, którą od powstania w 1922 r. jest Fundacja Barnesa. We wprowadzeniu do artykułu przedstawiono krótką charakterystykę progresywizmu i modernizmu oraz zarys historii powstawania amerykańskich kolekcji sztuki. Zasadniczą część pracy stanowi analiza działalności Alberta Barnesa w odniesieniu do postaw postępowych. W podsumowaniu stwierdzono, że realizowana przez Fundację idea propagowania i uczenia o sztuce do dziś pozostaje przykładem działalności na rzecz integracji, dialogu i przezwyciężania różnic społecznych.
