Le taux de participation à l'élection de 2012 a été de 75 %.Cela constitue un bond spectaculaire par rapport à l'élection de 2008, alors qu'il n'était que de 57 %.L'élection de 2008 représente toutefois un cas déviant, la « norme » depuis le début du siècle étant un taux autour de 70 % (graphique 11.1).L'élection de décembre 2008 était exceptionnelle à plusieurs égards.Elle survenait moins de deux ans après la précédente.En plus, elle suivait de peu l'élection historique aux États-Unis d'un premier président afroaméricain.Enfin, elle avait été précédée par une élection fédérale dont l'issue s'était soldée par la tentative infructueuse de la formation d'une coalition gouvernementale regroupant le Parti libéral du Canada, le Bloc québécois et le Nouveau Parti démocratique.L'esprit des Québécois, et en particulier celui des plus jeunes électeurs, n'était pas au rendez-vous à l'élection du 8 décembre 2008.La participation enregistrée en 2012 demeure légèrement plus élevée qu'en 2003 et 2007.Les craintes qui avaient été exprimées à l'effet qu'une campagne électorale menée pendant l'été au moment où plusieurs personnes étaient en vacances ne semblent pas avoir été fondées.L'élection a suivi un mouvement de grève étudiante sans précédent et on peut se demander si ce mouvement a contribué à une hausse de la participation.De la même façon, le Directeur général des élections du Québec (DGEQ) avait mis en place toute une série d'initiatives pour inciter les jeunes à ■ ■ ■ ■ ■
