De plus en plus d’études tendent à démontrer que la pandémie de COVID-19 a des répercussions inégales sur la santé, le bien-être et les finances des différents types de familles. Or, les nouveaux arrivants et les réfugiés, qui sont souvent confrontés à des situations difficiles, semblent être particulièrement vulnérables au moment de s’établir au pays pour y bâtir une nouvelle vie. Au printemps 2021, l’Institut Vanier de la famille s’est associé au Mothers Matter Centre afin d’étudier les répercussions de la pandémie sur les mères réfugiées ou nouvellement établies au pays qui étaient inscrites aux programmes offerts par le Centre, dans le cadre du sondage « Les répercussions de la COVID-19 : Les mères réfugiées ou nouvellement établies au Canada ». Le Mothers Matter Centre est un organisme national sans but lucratif qui propose des programmes de soutien aux mères isolées sur le plan social et socioéconomiquement vulnérables, ainsi qu’à leur famille. Les conclusions du sondage – réalisé du 13 avril au 13 mai 2021, dont les données ont été analysées par l’Association d’études canadiennes – donnent un aperçu des répercussions de la pandémie sur la santé et le bien-être, sur le travail et les finances des ménages, ainsi que sur les relations des mères inscrites aux programmes HIPPY (Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters – Enseignement à domicile pour les parents d’enfants d’âge préscolaire), SMART (Supporting Mothers and Raising Toddlers – Soutien aux mères et à l’éducation des enfants en bas âge) et BTL (Bond to Literacy – Lien vers l’alphabétisation) du Mothers Matter Centre.
