Abstract
The Old English distal demonstrative pronoun þæge is so rare that it has become a tradition to catalogue all identified tokens.1 The present note reports eight tokens of þæge found in two witnesses to King Alfred’s Old English translation of Pope Gregory the Great’s Cura pastoralis preserved in Cambridge, Trinity College R.5.22 (ff. 72–158; T) and Cambridge, University Library Ii. 2. 4 (U).2 Ker states that U was copied by one scribe (Scragg’s Hand 245) ‘almost certainly at Exeter’ in the third quarter of the eleventh century in a ‘stately upright script of the kind written at Exeter in the time of Bishop Leofric [1050–72]’.3 T is dated to the end of the tenth—beginning of the eleventh century; its origin, Schreiber believes, should be sought in the south of England, but not Winchester.4 Four hands are discernible in T.5 The two manuscripts ultimately derive from a common ancestor, now lost, which presumably contained a revised version of the Old English Pastoral Care. Horgan suggests that this revised version ‘was edited not only with considerable care but also with a distinctive sense of scholarship and “literary” style … [and] designed for practical use, inasmuch as the language was brought up to date lexically and syntactically (although not systematically)’.6 Since the pronoun þæge is among the linguistic features that distinguish manuscripts T and U from the rest of the copies and since T and U agree on three out of five instances of the pronoun þæge, it is reasonable to assume that þæge is inherited from T’s and U’s common ancestor.7
