Operational Aggregation of Dual-Mode Circulator and Dual-Polarization Antenna with Built-in Tunable Self-Interference Cancellation for Full-Duplex

Abstract
In this work, we propose, investigate, and demonstrate a fundamental approach to developing full-duplex (FD) transceiver systems that can outperform current state-of-the-art techniques in terms of performance, efficiency, cost, and complexity, thereby facilitating the commercial adoption of FD technologies. Our scheme is based on an operational aggregation of dual-mode (DM) circulator and dual-polarization (DP) antenna within a DM Substrate-integrated waveguide (SIW) platform, thus creating a low-cost all-passive architecture. By assigning different orthogonal polarizations and modes to the transmitter (Tx) and receiver (Rx) channels, we can significantly improve the primary isolation of conventional circulators. Moreover, we introduce a distinctive passive tunable secondary elf-interference cancellation (SIC) mechanism integrated inherently within our architecture, which further boosts the Tx-Rx isolation across a wide bandwidth. Our experimental prototype implemented in the analog domain has demonstrated impressive isolation levels of 70 and 80 dB over bandwidths of 100 and 33 MHz over 5 GHz band, respectively, while exhibiting exceptional frequency tuning capabilities.
