Abstract
We have known already for a long time that the Swedish mystic Saint Birgitta, or Birgitta of Sweden (1303–1373), exerted a huge influence on her contemporaries and posterity. Since 2007, several Swedish academic institutions have taken it upon themselves to deepen our understanding of this famous female religious. In 2020, the fourth symposium dedicated to her took place, and the expanded papers are now available in the present volume. The central theme focused on the networks established by Birgitta and her followers, which extended all over Europe, including even the Iberian Peninsula and England. Each article is well developed, fully researched, and offers, in a variety of ways, innovative perspectives. A number of them is beautifully illuminated, but a cumulative list of images is missing, as is an index. The editors provide a compact and informative introduction. The volume concludes with brief bios of the contributors who come from Norway, Sweden, Finland, Canada, and Israel, but the email addresses are left out.
