Abstract
Certaines études suggèrent que les traits de personnalité limite en émergence (TPLÉ) seraient liés aux mauvais traitements subis à l'enfance et qu'une faible capacité d'empathie ainsi que la présence de comportements intériorisés et extériorisés y soient associées (Dubé et al., 2013). Puisque la majorité des enfants hébergés en Centre de la protection de l'enfance et de la jeunesse (CPEJ) ont été victimes de maltraitance, ceux-ci semblent être davantage à risque de développer ces difficultés, en comparaison aux jeunes issus de la population générale et ceux consultant en psychologie (Directeurs de la protection de la jeunesse, 2023). Cette étude vise à comparer ces trois groupes en ce qui concerne les TPLÉ, l'empathie (cognitive, affective, globale) et les comportements intériorisés et extériorisés. Elle cherche aussi à vérifier le rôle modérateur de l'empathie sur la relation entre les TPLÉ et les comportements extériorisés. Méthode. Cent seize enfants de 6 à 12 ans ont été rencontrés: 35 jeunes hébergés en CPEJ, 42 consultant en psychologie et 39 issus de la population générale. Les enfants ainsi que leur mère ou leur éducateur (enfants en CPEJ) ont rempli des questionnaires mesurant les diverses variables à l’étude. Les analyses de variance révèlent une différence significative entre les enfants hébergés en CPEJ et ceux de la population générale concernant les TPLÉ, l'empathie globale mesurée auprès des enfants et les comportements intériorisés et extériorisés. L'empathie globale mesurée auprès des enfants modère la relation entre les TPLÉ et les comportements extériorisés. La présente recherche permet de cibler des variables à considérer lors des interventions auprès des enfants présentant des TPLÉ afin d’éviter la cristallisation de ces derniers. Some studies suggest that emerging borderline personality traits (EBPD) are linked to childhood maltreatment and that the presence of empathy difficulties and internalized and externalized behaviors are associated with them. Since most children housed in Youth Protection Centers (YPC) have been victims of maltreatment, they appear to be at greater risk of developing these difficulties compared to children from the general population and those consulting a psychologist. This study compares these three groups regarding EBPD, empathy (cognitive, affective, global), and internalized and externalized behaviors. It also aims to verify the moderating role of empathy in the relationship between EBPD and externalized behaviors. Method. One hundred and sixteen children aged 6 to 12 were divided into three groups: 35 housed in Youth Protection Centers, 42 consulting in psychology, and 39 from the general population. Children and caregivers responded to separate questionnaires measuring the various variables under study. Analysis of variance revealed a significant difference between children housed in YPC and those in the general population regarding EBPD, self-reported global empathy, and internalized and externalized behaviors. Global empathy also seems to moderate the relationship between EBPD and externalized behaviors when assessed by children. These results would make it possible to target variables to consider during interventions with children with EBPD to avoid the consolidation of their EBPD traits into adult borderline personality disorder.
