CONCEPTS ON THE ROLE OF FORTUNE IN THE WAR IN ENGLISH AND FRENCH NARRATORY SOURCES OF THE SECOND HALF OF THE XIV - THE FIRST QUARTER OF THE XV CENTURIES
Bibliographic record
Abstract
This article provides a detailed analysis of the ideas about the role of Fortune in military operations among a number of iconic thinkers, chroniclers and poets from England and France in the second half of the 14th - the first quarter of the 15th centuries. In the domestic scientific literature, the medieval image of Fortune has been studied in detail, but the military aspect is considered for the first time. It does not introduce fundamental changes into the classical tradition, but contains a number of nuances that complement modern studies of medieval ideas about war. The main subject of the study is the perception of the role of Fortune in the description and understanding of hostilities. Treatises on military affairs, as well as historical and literary works are used as sources. The author of the article demonstrates the main trend and the main stages in the formation of attitudes towards Fortune. The general logic consists in the growing opposition of man to self-willed luck and his desire to limit its influence. In the middle of the XIV century, the hope of accidental luck comes under attack, instead of it, their own efforts are promoted. In the second half of the century, the division of the positive and negative sides of Fortune manifests itself, and the beginnings of the idea of opposing its harmful influence arise. Finally, at the beginning of the 15th century, a conscious desire to protect oneself with caution from possible bad luck was fully formed. The positive and negative influence of Fortune is reduced to a minimum, and in opposition to them, the notion of human creative freedom, characteristic of the Renaissance, is born. The main engine in the formation of this attitude is the French authors, while the English mostly follow in line with the established tradition, adopting new changes, but not creating them.
