Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

In 2019, Canada’s National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (NIMMIWG) issued its Final Report. The Inquiry’s significant records included nearly 1,000 artistic expressions submitted by family members of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA People – the Legacy Archive – intended to raise awareness about the issue, to contribute to healing, and to call forth important memories that can serve to ground change for the future. Working from the intersection of my curatorial work with the Canadian Museum for Human Rights (CMHR) and my subsequent role within the National Inquiry, this chapter chronicles the journey of the National Inquiry’s Legacy Archive to the CMHR. Through its establishment in the context of the National Inquiry to its eventual transfer to the CMHR, this unique collection challenges the traditional power dynamics of archives, museums, and of those responsible for them. Ultimately, I argue that the intentionality behind the Legacy Archive as a radical anticolonial love story is a unique and important legacy model for commemoration that can continue to call for change long past the end of any mandate and that is particularly relevant in museum context. As an accessible way to interact with strength-based narratives that are an essential part of any story of loss, the Legacy Archive’s journey, as well as my own, begs the question of how institutions can care for and engage with these sorts of expressions in a way that respects the goals of its creators within the creation of a new ethical space at the intersection of power, intention, and anticolonial remembering.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
