Formée aux méthodes ethnographiques conçues dans les années 1930 en France au musée d’Ethnographie du Trocadéro, où la photographie occupe une place importante, Monique Roussel de Fontanès réalise dans les années 1950 ses premières missions de terrain en Calabre pour le compte du musée de l’Homme. Sa pratique d’enquête, centrée sur le costume traditionnel féminin, donne une large part à la photographie. En lien avec les objets, les dessins, les notes, celle-ci participe à un vaste projet de documentation conforme à l’ambition du musée et à l’intérêt de celui-ci pour la culture matérielle. Mais les échanges qui se mettent en place autour du port du costume et de l’utilisation de l’appareil photographique lui permettent également d’établir et d’entretenir des relations de proximité avec ses interlocutrices, fondées sur le partage et une forme de réciprocité. Si la dimension affective du travail de terrain s’efface avec l’indexation, la publication et l’exposition en vitrine des documents collectés, les photographies en portent la trace, et leur mise en perspective avec les archives et la correspondance de l’ethnologue permet de lui redonner toute sa complexité et sa profondeur.
