Abstract
Cet article a pour objectif de comprendre comment les concepts de religion et spiritualité opèrent dans l’appareil psychique haïtien chez une population haïtienne survivante du séisme de 2010. Les notions de spiritualité et de religion sont définies à travers une revue non exhaustive de la littérature scientifique. Les participants, n = 20, sont rencontrés dans quatre pays, Canada, États-Unis d’Amérique, France et Haïti, en distanciel et en présentiel autour des entretiens semi-directifs où l’expérience du séisme, la migration à l’étranger et la résonance de spiritualité et religion sont abordées. Les données recueillies montrent que les participants ne distinguent pas ces deux notions qui leur apparaissent polymorphes et ambiguës. Toutefois, une petite différence est observée sur ce qui est recherché dans la religion et la spiritualité, c’est le lien social. Les résultats montrent également que les pratiques spirituelles et religieuses diminuent à l’arrivée à l’étranger, notamment chez les participants résidant en France ; alors que nous observons une légère hausse de la pratique de la spiritualité et de la religion chez les résidents nord-américains. Au terme de l’article, nous proposons une discussion sur la confusion observée chez les participants entre les notions de religion et spiritualité. Dans le contexte historique haïtien, il y a lieu de se demander s’il s’agit vraiment d’une confusion, d’un syncrétisme religieux ou d’une sorte de marronnage méthodologique. Deux limites majeures de l’étude sont présentées : la première concerne la taille de l’échantillon des participants dans les différents sites de notre recherche qui est trop petite et, la deuxième, seulement des personnes spirituelles et religieuses ont été interrogées, alors qu’il aurait été intéressant d’avoir l’avis des personnes non croyantes. The aim of this article is to understand how the concepts of religion and spirituality operate in the Haitian psychic apparatus in a Haitian population that survived the 2010 earthquake. The notions of spirituality and religion are defined through a non-exhaustive review of the scientific literature. The participants ( n = 20) were interviewed in four countries (Canada, United States of America, France, and Haiti), both face-to-face and remotely, in semi-directive interviews where the experience of the earthquake, migration abroad, and the resonance of spirituality and religion were discussed. The data collected show that the interview subjects do not distinguish between these two notions, which they see as polymorphous and ambiguous. However, there is a slight difference in what is sought in religion and spirituality: the social bond. The results also show that spiritual and religious practices decrease upon arrival abroad, particularly among participants residing in France, while we observe an uptick in the practice of spirituality and religion among North American residents. At the end of the article, we propose a discussion of the confusion observed among participants between the notions of religion and spirituality. In the Haitian historical context, one must wonder whether this is really confusion, religious syncretism, or a kind of methodological “marronnage.” Two major limitations of the study are presented: the first concerns the sample size of participants in the different sites of our research which is too small; the second, only spiritual and religious people were interviewed, whereas it would have been interesting to have the opinion of non-believers.
