Quelques rescapés du massacre parisien de la Saint-Barthélemy ont livré un témoignage de l’événement au sein de leurs Mémoires : Jean Mergey ; Charlotte Arbaleste, épouse de Philippe Duplessis-Mornay ; le duc de La Force, Jacques Nompar de Caumont ; Jacques Pape de Saint-Auban ; le duc de Sully, Maximilien de Béthune. Leurs récits, par-delà la variété des situations dont ils rendent compte, mettent en valeur un même idéal éthique de fidélité, qui guide leurs comportements en tant qu’acteurs ou actrice autant qu’il fonde leur crédibilité en tant que témoins. Après avoir montré comment la Saint-Barthélemy constitue une crise de la foi, cet article s’intéresse d’abord à la vertu compensatoire des Mémoires, dont la rédaction est mue par un souci de mémoire et par un impératif de justice. Il montre ensuite comment, en leur sein, les témoignages, directs ou indirects, prennent la forme de récits soucieux de garantir leur authenticité. Tous placent au centre de l’attention un ou une survivante du massacre et lui offrent la possibilité d’une présentation favorable de lui-même ou d’elle-même. Se décrivant comme un serviteur diligent, une dissimulatrice prudente ou un adolescent prodige, chaque rescapé relate et défend une conduite qui lui a permis de survivre sans se renier à long terme, tout en reconnaissant ce qu’il ou elle doit au secours d’autrui ou à la volonté divine.
