Strain selection and temperature responses of Ulva and Ulvaria (Chlorophyta) for application in land-based cultivation systems

Makroalgefamilien, Ulvaceae, rummer lovende kandidater til dyrkning i landbaserede Integrerede Multitrofiske Recirkulerede Akvakultursystemer (IMRAS) på grund af deres hurtige vækst og næringsstofoptagelsesevner. Valg af passende stammer er dog afgørende før implementering i IMRAS. I denne undersøgelse blev en evaluering af Ulvaceae-stammer udført gennem en indledende screening af i alt ni stammer, otte hentet fra naturlige levesteder og en kommerciel Ulva-producent. De abiotiske forhold var karakteriseret ved høje næringsstofkoncentrationer (883 μM NO3−-N) og blev holdt ensartede for alle stammer under screeningen. Efter den indledende screening blev effekten af temperatur på vækst undersøgt (10, 16, 22 og 28 °C) i to udvalgte stammer (Ulva compressa og Ulvaria obscura) under høje næringsstofbetingelser. Denne undersøgelse viste, at fire undersøgte Ulvaceae-stammer opnåede høje og stabile vækstrater (15-22 % frisk vægt d−1) i indendørs fritflydende kulturer. Desuden var der en konsekvent og betydelig kvælstofoptagelsesevne af en enkelt Ulva compressa-stamme ved temperaturer mellem 10 og 22 °C (0,03 g N L−1 uge−1 svarende til 74 % af tilsat opløst uorganisk kvælstof). Ulva compressa voksede ved alle undersøgte temperaturer med ugentlige variationer i biomasseudbytter (18-40 g tørvægt m−2 dag−1), mens Ulvaria obscura voksede stabilt ved 10, 16 og 22 °C (15-16 g tørvægt m−2 dag−1). Resultaterne af denne undersøgelse forbedrer vores forståelse af de potentielle anvendelser af Ulvaceae-stammer i landbaseret dyrkning og tjener som et springbræt for integrationen af Ulvaceae-dyrkning i IMRAS på kommerciel skala.
