Abstract
L’attaque de requin subie par un champion de surf australien pendant l’étape sud-africaine du championnat de surf le plus prestigieux au monde, en 2015, a été lue par de nombreux Australiens comme l’actualisation des valeurs associées à la figure du surfeur, perçu à la fois comme une expression emblématique des traits définissant socialement « l’australianité » et la masculinité. Basé sur une analyse ethnographique de l’univers du surf sur la Gold Coast (Australie), l’article s’intéresse au rôle et aux éléments constitutifs de cette figure dans les représentations de l’identité australienne. En effet, le surf incarne ici certaines des valeurs culturelles autour desquelles se sont construites les images de l’identité nationale. Parmi celles-ci, le courage assure un rôle paradigmatique, agissant symboliquement comme le pivot d’une culture sportive exclusive, majoritairement occidentale (blanche), se présentant comme un espace de manifestation et de définition de la masculinité. Séduisant écho contemporain du héros romantique, le surfeur australien incarne le charme de la liberté, l’attrait pour l’hédonisme « fun », la camaraderie entre jeunes hommes et — sans contradiction — l’individualisme compétitif qui caractérise l’éthique néolibérale et les dynamiques d’exclusion qui ont marqué l’histoire sociale et sportive de l’Australie après la colonisation.
