Abstract
Le récit de voyage semi‑autobiographique d’Elizabeth von Arnim, The Adventures of Elizabeth in Rügen, combine des réflexions humoristiques sur les interactions interculturelles avec des descriptions vives de l’île de Rügen dans la mer Baltique. Alors que la narratrice fait le tour de l’île, elle se retrouve de plus en plus impliquée dans la dissolution du mariage de sa cousine Charlotte et modifie son itinéraire pour tenter de réconcilier le couple. Peu lu en Allemagne du vivant de l’auteure, c’est à partir de la chute du mur que le texte commence à y circuler, permettant aux Allemands de l’ouest de redécouvrir un pays presque inaccessible durant l’existence des deux Allemagnes. L’intérêt renouvelé pour ce texte est un exemple d’“afterlife” (Astrid Erll, 2011) et permet de réfléchir aux raisons de sa pérennité dans la culture allemande. Nous proposons d’interroger la particularité de la représentation de Rügen construite à partir d’une vision féminine de l’espace ainsi que sa réception.
