Experiences of caregivers of adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder during COVID-19 in Colombia

Abstract
In March 2020, Colombia reported the first case of COVID-19. For caregivers of adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) the pandemic represented unexpected, additional challenges. This exploratory study reports some of the experiences these caregivers of adolescents diagnosed with ASD faced in this region. Fourteen caregivers of adolescents with ASD were interviewed in Bogota, Colombia. Results from the interviews show that there were barriers and facilitators in adjusting to the restrictions of the pandemic. Some barriers include changes in routines, which instigated behavioral changes in the adolescents, and a negative impact on the caregivers’ mental health. Facilitators like companion animals, the temperament of adolescents, and family support helped caregivers adjust to the pandemic. This data highlights the resilience of Colombian caregivers during the pandemic and provides some recommendations for caregivers and professionals to address some of the challenges related to adolescents during and after the pandemic and potential emergency situations.
