Abstract
Walter Jackson Ong, medya, iletişim, kültür ve eğitim ile alakalı konuları felsefe ve teolojiyle ilişkilendirerek çalışmalar ortaya koymuş bir iletişim bilimcidir. Akademik çalışmalarının en başından ölümüne kadar ele aldığı tüm çalışmalar birbirleriyle bağlantılı olan Ong, özellikle sözlü ve yazılı kültür konusundaki fikirleriyle öne çıkmıştır. Ong, iletişim ve medya çalışmalarıyla öne çıkan Toronto Okulu geleneğinin önemli bir temsilcisi olmasının yanında iletişim ve medya çalışmalarına yeni bir bakış açısı sunan medya ekolojisi geleneği için de önemli bir isimdir. İnanç alanı ile çalışma sahası iç içe geçmiş bir akademisyen olarak Ong; iletişim, retorik, edebiyat ve sistem teorisi tartışmalarını bir araya getirmiştir. Marshall McLuhan, Neil Postman ve Eric Havelock gibi isimlerle eş zamanlı olarak iletişim süreçleri üzerine çalışmıştır ve bu isimlerin çalışmalarından da etkilenmiştir.
