L’ITALIANO ATTRAVERSO LA STAMPA IN CANADA: IL CASO DEL «PROGRESSO ITALO-CANADESE» (1929-1932)

Abstract
Il contributo intende evidenziare alcuni aspetti del linguaggio giornalistico del “Progresso Italo-Canadese”, periodico in lingua italiana pubblicato a Toronto tra le due guerre mondiali. Attraverso l’analisi degli aspetti giornalistici e linguistici, svolta sulla pagina della cronaca cittadina nei primi sei mesi di pubblicazione del giornale, si evidenziano le specificità della lingua utilizzata in quel particolare contesto – la comunità italiana di Toronto – e in quel particolare momento storico, in cui la stampa risente dell’influenza del linguaggio e dei temi veicolati dal regime fascista. Se da un lato si evidenziano costrutti che rimandano alla lingua dei giornali dell’epoca – e di periodi precedenti – in Italia, dall’altro si segnalano strutture mutuate dalla lingua inglese. I testi sui quali è svolta l’analisi sono conservati presso Library and Archives Canada (LAC) di Ottawa. Italian language in Canada: the case of the Progresso Italo-Canadese periodical (1929-1932) The paper highlights some aspects of the language of Progresso Italo-Canadese, an Italian-language periodical published in Toronto between the two World Wars and preserved at Library and Archives Canada (LAC) in Ottawa. The analysis looks at page 3 (local news) of the newspaper in the first six months of publication, studying journalistic and linguistic aspects. The analysis highlights the specificities of the language used in that context – the Italian community of Toronto – and in that moment, in which the press felt the influence of language and themes conveyed by the fascist regime. While on the one hand, constructs that refer to the language of the newspapers of the time – and earlier periods – in Italy are highlighted, on the other hand, constructs borrowed from the English language are also noted.
