vanghlia Stead retrace, dans Goethe's Faust I Outlined -Moritz Retzsch's Prints in Circulation, les mtamorphoses successives -entre mdiums et cultures -des vingt-six eaux fortes de Faust 1, ralises par l'artiste Moritz Retzsch selon la technique du dessin au trait (outline, en anglais), et publies en 1816 en Allemagne.Avec une extrme minutie historique, fonde sur un retour aux sources primaires, et aux archives, l'auteure y dmle -autant que faire se peut -les circulations europennes de ces estampes, entre leur apparition et le dbut du XX e sicle.Cet ensemble restreint de gravures -qui semblent porter en elles-mmes, par leur conomie de moyens, toutes les potentialits de mouvement et de rsilience -est tudi selon une alternance de perspectives : entre de vastes horizons spatio-temporels -de multiples pays, sur des dcennies -, et une attention scrupuleuse aux dtails -au plus prs des objets, de leur matrialit.Dans leur diffusion, ces images sont copies, transfres, rendues hybrides, comme emportes par la culture imprime, et mdiatique, de l'Europe du XIX e sicle.Le parti pris consiste donc -par-del la rhabilitation d'un artiste relativement oubli tudier les reproductions de Retzsch de la faon la plus large possible -les copies constituant, plus que les estampes originales, le vritable sujet de l'ouvrage.Les ditions pirates peuvent tre luxueuses ou populaires, mais elles sont ce par quoi ces dessins au trait circulent.L'auteure tudie ainsi leurs r-inventions, dans diffrents
