Jonathan Lainey, du Musée McCord apporte des nuances importantes aux rapports de Dubois[1]. Tous s’accordent néanmoins pour trouver (et moi de même) que les micro-rapports sur les vies individuelles (surtout celles des autochtones) semblent particulièrement intéressantes. Personnellement, j’ai grandement apprécié les illustrations des portraits d’autochtones (quoi qu’en dise Alice –au pays des merveilles—sur les bons livres sans illustration), parce que dans ce cas, ils nous rapportent à un vécu tel qu’Edward S. Curtis a cherché bien plus tard à retenir dans ses portraits photographiques. Ensuite, il me semble important de comparer, comme Dubois l’a fait ponctuellement, les finances et les philosophies des programmes d’enseignement des jeunes filles pauvres en France et au Québec, puis de chercher à en tracer les résultats au cas par cas, dans ce qui a été découvert en archives. On retourne parfois en arrière pour ce qui est de la chronologie d’exposition, mais un véritable effort de contextualisation par rapport à des efforts individuels et des politiques de la couronne de France, ou d’ordres religieux en compétition, ou bien comportant les concurrences entre les puissances anglaises et françaises sont reprises avec une clarification de leurs mécanismes d’imbrication. D‘ailleurs Dubois n’en est pas à son premier rapport sur le sujet. Il a déjà publié un ouvrage sur les Récollets. Cherchant les origines de l’écriture francophone des femmes écrivaines autochtones du Québec en remontant au XVIIe siècle, j’ai trouvé cet ouvrage potentiellement révélateur de la réception genrée et la position des écrivaines francophones de minorités autochtones depuis les années 1970.
