Abstract

A new ranking of universities (The Magnificent 7, TM7) is based on the ranks of the top seven scientists from a given university in a ranking of scientists. This idea was tested using recent rankings of scientists based on the total number of independent citations, h-index, Schreiber’s hm index, and composite index by Ioannidis et al. The ranks of universities in TM7 based on the mentioned four criteria are highly correlated. The ranks of universities in TM7 are compared with their ranks in other popular rankings like the Shanghai ranking and the Times Higher Education ranking. TM7 can be used with any ranking of scientists and updated when rankings of scientists are updated.
