« I, pet goat II » est un court métrage d’animation canadien produit en 2012 par un studio d’animation basée à Montréal. Le titre du film est inspiré du livre de contes que lisait George W. Bush à des élèves dans une école américaine lorsqu’on lui a annoncé l’attaque des deux tours du World Trade Center en 2001. Le film ne contient aucun dialogue. Pourtant, il offre une grande dose de messages métaphoriques politiques et religieux d’une forte connotation faisant des allusions aux évènements qui ont suivi les attaques spectaculaires du 11/9 et qui ont marqué le début du IIIe millénaire. Ainsi, des évènements tels que la guerre contre le terrorisme, le conflit des grandes puissances, le déclin de l’Europe, la destruction massive de l’humanité… sont évoqués sous forme d’images qui se succèdent l’une après l’autre attestant de la justesse de la théorie du complot. Est-ce que l’image était, à elle seule, capable de transmettre les messages voulus par la production de ce court film muet ? La présente recherche est une tentative de répondre à cette question. Nous avons procédé à une analyse sémiologique de l’animation basée sur l’approche proposée par Roland Barthes dans son étude « Rhétorique de l’image ». Barthes, en adoptant une démarche structurale dans son analyse d’une image publicitaire, a étudié les trois types de messages qui se trouvent dans chaque image à savoir : le message linguistique, le message iconique codé et un message iconique non-codé. L’objectif de la recherche est de décoder les signes sous-jacents du film à travers l’étude de la combinaison de ces messages dans les images du film.
