Abstract
This study offers an in-depth analysis of the use and semantic-pragmatic characteristics of new quotative markers in spoken French. The focus is on markers such as ‘être là’, ‘être comme/genre/en mode’, and ‘faire comme/genre’, observed primarily in the spoken language of younger generations born after the 1990s, particularly in Francophone communities in Canada. These markers go beyond merely conveying others' speech, as they vividly reproduce the original speech situation by incorporating non-verbal elements such as gestures, onomatopoeia, and visual information. This research utilizes Desclés' universal applicative grammar and the theory of enunciative operations to analyze the unique meaning of constructions like [X être là what is said] within the framework of the enunciative referential, a spatio-temporal concept centered on the speaker. The study aims to demonstrate that direct quotation in spoken discourse is the result of a complex enunciative operation and to elucidate how these new quotative markers each convey a distinct meaning. Unlike previous quantitative studies that focused on discursive meaning types or the grammaticalization process of quotative markers, this study provides a thorough discussion of the syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic aspects of these markers. Furthermore, it seeks to objectively and systematically prove that direct quotation in spoken language is not merely an act of transmitting others' speech but is instead the product of a complex enunciative process. Through this analysis of quotative markers in spoken French, the study offers new insights into the concepts, meanings, and functions of direct quotation, making a significant contribution to research on spoken French.
