Nous n'oublierons jamais l'impression profonde que produisit sur nos jeunes imaginations d'étudiants l'apparition de l'Histoire du Canada de M. Garneau.Ce livre était une révélation pour nous.Cette clarté lumineuse qui se levait tout à coup sur un sol vierge, et nous en découvrait les richesses et la puissante végétation, les monuments et les souvenirs, nous ravissait d'étonnement autant que d'admiration 1 .François-Xavier Garneau est né à Québec le 15 juin 1809.Les origines canadiennes de sa famille plongent jusqu'au XVII e siècle.Poitevin, son ancêtre Louis Garnault s'est installé sur la côte de Beaupré vers 1659.Son père François-Xavier a d'abord été cultivateur, puis voiturier, capitaine de goélette et, enfin, aubergiste.Si sa famille est ancienne, elle n'est pas pour autant très fortunée, de telle sorte que le jeune Garneau n'a pas les moyens de poursuivre des études classiques.À l'âge de 14 ans, il devient saute-ruisseau au greffe de la Cour du banc du roi, sous la protection du greffier Joseph-François Perrault dont il avait par ailleurs fréquenté l'école.Deux ans plus tard, il opte pour le notariat et commence sa cléricature chez le notaire Archibald Campbell.Tant Perrault que Campbell mettent à la disposition de leurs clercs leurs riches bibliothèques.Autodidacte, Garneau lit Milton et Shakespeare, Montesquieu et Voltaire, notamment.Il apprend l'anglais, le latin et l'italien.Il obtient sa commission de notaire le 23 juin 1830, mais il poursuit ses études notariales durant une autre année.Tout comme ses nombreuses lectures, les voyages façonnent l'apprentissage du futur historien.En 1828, par l'intermédiaire de Campbell, il parcourt durant quelques semaines les autres colonies anglaises et les 1.
