Abstract
To enhance aerospace structures by reducing weight and improving damage tolerance and corrosion resistance, there is an increasing shift towards utilizing bonded composite primary structures. Thus, the Air Force Research Laboratory initiated the OPPERA program (OMC Process-to-Performance Evaluation, Research, and Analysis) to reduce risk during design and certification of bonded structures through the use of physics-based models and software tools that provide a detailed understanding of failure mechanisms and could be used to augment and guide testing. Under the OPPERA program a process-to-performance framework has been developed and is being demonstrated for bonded, three-dimensional textile pi-preform joints. The process-to-performance framework has been used to provide a better understanding of pi-joint failure, and models have been developed that support different types of solutions — high fidelity global/local simulations in BSAM for predicting discrete damage in the pi-preform and faster-running, lower fidelity homogenized pi-joint simulations in Abaqus for predicting bondline failure. This paper highlights some of the latest results and finding from the OPPERA program. The paper discusses some process simulation results but focuses on recent pi-joint performance simulations.
