Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

This research focuses on inclusive recreation for people with mobility or motor disabilities in nature, specifically in national parks in Canada and Spain.Framed within Critical Disability Theories and the principles of the Theory of Good Environmental Governance, the study explores how power dynamics and institutional structures create barriers to equitable nature-based recreation.Naturebased recreation is a widely studied issue. However, the social incorporation of universal accessibility in recreational activities in national parks is one of the great unfinished challenges. This is even more evident as people with disabilities become more and more visible in society. This research contextualizes accessibility in natural environments by analysing the interplay between conservation and inclusion, drawing from the frameworks of universal accessibility and the Sustainable Development Goals #3, #10, and #15 of the 2030 Agenda, on good health and wellbeing, reduced inequalities and the life on land, respectively.Mixed methods of analysis have been used, combining both quantitative and qualitative analyses.Initially, the paradigm of good environmental governance is addressed through a series of indicators that assess the dimensions of discourses, rules, resources, and actors in the national park networks of Canada and Spain.First, by focusing on the discourses, it is determined whether the rules provide for inclusive access to national parks. Then, an online survey of potential users, a component that makes up the actor dimension, is carried out to determine the needs, wishes and barriers faced by people v with mobility or motor disabilities. Finally, the efficiency of the information on the official websites of the Spanish national park network is analysed, addressing the resource dimension. The results reveal that the target population faces multiple barriers in the natural environment. The findings extend the theoretical understanding of "invisible institutional barriers" by demonstrating their impact on accessibility and governance structures. This contributes to Critical Disability Theories by exposing how these barriers are embedded in systemic governance practices. The assessment of good environmental governance shows the existence of invisible institutional barriers that hinder equal access to the national parks studied. The survey reveals specific needs and wishes of people with mobility or motor disabilities that are not being met by the actors involved in the governance of the park network. In addition to the physical barriers presented by the natural environment, psycho-social barriers (intrapersonal and interpersonal) are decisive for the development of measures to promote inclusive public use in parks.Thirdly, the study also contributes to the growing discourse on digital accessibility, showing how the analysis of the websites of the Spanish national parks points to a number of deficiencies in terms of the information provided and, in their presence, or lack thereof in online search engine results. The current technological context is creating a new barrier that increases inequalities and, consequently, expands the gap between nature and people with disabilities. The research suggests that understanding and addressing invisible institutional barriers is crucial to promoting inclusive recreation in national parks. It provides insights into governance by emphasizing the importance of empowerment through participatory frameworks, aligning with the International Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities to ensure intersectional realities are recognized and addressed.Properly integrating international treaties such as the International Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities is fundamental to recognising and meeting the needs and desires of all intersectional realities in nature-based recreation. In conclusion, people with mobility or motor disabilities face a variety of barriers that need to be addressed from a multidimensional perspective.Invisible institutional barriers need to be resolved through inclusive policies and good environmental governance. This research enriches the discourse on accessibility, providing a multidimensional framework that integrates governance, intersectionality, and practical recommendations for achieving inclusive nature-based recreation in national parks in Canada and Spain. vi Resumen.
