Abstract
Vers la fin des années 1920, au Collège Sainte-Marie à Montréal, Hector de Saint-Denys Garneau se lie d’amitié avec André Laurendeau. Leur correspondance témoigne des affinités qui les unissent, d’une affection intime, profonde et sincère. Pourtant, au sortir du collège, ils s’éloigneront progressivement l’un de l’autre. Alors que Laurendeau s’engage dans la voie de l’action nationale à la tête des Jeune-Canada, Garneau, choisissant plutôt l’avenue littéraire, construit son personnage de poète. À partir de la correspondance qu’ils entretiennent de 1931 à 1938, nous tentons d’éclairer les causes et la nature de cette divergence au sujet de la question nationale, mais aussi de la relativiser et d’en souligner la complémentarité en tenant compte de l’enseignement classique prodigué au Collège Sainte-Marie. Notre démarche permet, par ailleurs, de mieux comprendre les réseaux de sociabilité et les amitiés qui s’y nouent, lesquels connaissent de féconds prolongements à l’âge adulte.
