Abstract
La guerre de Sécession (1861-1865) sert de point de départ à de nombreux ouvrages d’histoire franco-américaine. Or, le récit franco-américain qui nous est familier dissimule le processus d’organisation communautaire et l’établissement d’institutions canadiennes-françaises aux États-Unis dans les années 1840 et 1850. Dans le Vermont et, surtout, l’État de New York, soutenus par une population migrante en pleine croissance, des curés et des « missionnaires » laïcs contribuent à la construction d’une conscience ethnique qui, lorsque les conditions le permettent, se manifeste par des paroisses nationales, des associations culturelles et des rassemblements politiques. Si de telles démarches succombent souvent à la mobilité des familles migrantes et à leurs faibles moyens, elles annoncent l’organisation d’une vie franco-américaine mieux connue en périphérie de Boston.
