Abstract
More than other cities, Berlin is a terrain of conflicting meanings and codes demanding interpretation. Following the trails of translators Régine Robin, Esra Ackan, Yoko Tawada and Cécile Wajsbrot, all of them translators in their own way of the present and past of Berlin, this essay explores interactions between German and Yiddish, Turkish, Japanese and French. This essay responds to two research questions. The first concerns the interaction of languages in urban space, and more specifically, the ways that conversations across small spaces are enabled or hindered through translation. The second is a focus on the specific contributions of women translators whose writing careers were conducted across languages. As a city of layered histories, Berlin offers a rich canvas for the pursuit of this double focus. To listen to the languages involved and their translators is to hear Berlin differently. It means to amplify the voice of translation in cityspace, boosting the echoes of the past as well as the noisy conversations of the present.
