Abstract
Cet article prend comme point de départ la question problématique de l’opportunité de jouer ou non le solo de harpe attribué au personnage de David dans l’oratorio de Georg Friedrich Haendel Saul (1739). Rejeté par certains éditeurs, ce passage supposé figurer la guérison de Saül par David propose cependant un moment fort, dûment présent dans l’hypotexte biblique. D’abord corrélé aux principaux contextes esthétiques de l’ouvrage dont il est extrait, ce morceau est mis en perspective par rapport aux aspects historico-politiques de l’œuvre. Il est ainsi contextualisé à la lumière des théories mises en avant par Ruth Smith selon lesquelles la succession Saül/David dépeinte dans l’oratorio serait une représentation allégorique de la mise en place de la dynastie hanovrienne. Sans aller jusqu’à exploiter les théories exprimées dans les années 1990 par l’historien libanais Kamal Salibi, selon lesquelles la relation entre David et Saül aurait été de nature homosexuelle, on pourra se demander dans quelle mesure il était convenable de représenter au théâtre un acte thérapeutique relevant à ce point du domaine de l’intime. La mise en scène récente de Barrie Kosky permet enfin d’enrichir la perspective.
