Abstract
This chapter establishes the importance of mentorship from the perspective of first-generation undergraduate students. Balancing scholarly personal narrative, review of literature, and drawing on examples beyond academia, we highlight the educational journey of first-generation women pursuing an undergraduate degree with a focus on the importance of women's mentorship to enact systems change. We have found women's mentorship to be a necessary guiding light to help us see what is invisible within our systems. Surfacing hidden injustices that are embedded in educational systems is the first step to radically alter the academy for inclusivity. In order to support student success through mentorship, we highlight the need for diversity and establish that community is vital. By drawing on personal reflections, family histories, and lived experiences, we create an accessible narrative to advocate for women's mentorship relationships in higher education.
