An Examination of The Effects of Stem Cell Therapy on Knee Functionality in Patients Diagnosed With Knee Osteoarthritis

Abstract

Objective: This study aims to evaluate the effect of knee functionality through physical test scores in osteoarthritis (OA) patients who received adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) treatment without specific physical therapy. Theoretical Framework: The main theory underpinning this research is that MSC-derived stem cell therapy can improve knee functionality without the need for specific physical therapy. This theory is based on the premise that mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), due to their regenerative properties. Method: 25 knee osteoarthritis patients file included the study. Knee Assessment Form, Berg Balance Scale (BBS), Timed Up and Go Test, Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC), and Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) were used of the evaluation. All test scores were compared before and after the therapy two times taken one month apart. Results and Discussion: The range of motion for both dominant and non-dominant joints significantly improved compared to pre-treatment levels (p<0.001). When evaluating pain and fatigue using the VAS, post-treatment measurements showed a significant reduction compared to pre-treatment values (p<0.001). Results of the 30-second stand-sit and 6-minute walk tests significantly improved after the therapy (p<0.001). The total scores for Berg Balance Scale (BERG) and WOMAC significantly improved in subsequent measurements (p<0.001). Research Implications: The application of MSC (mesenchymal stem cell) therapy has shown positive results in patients with OA of the knee and can be practically applied even without the need for specific physical therapy. Originality/Value: The findings suggest that MSC therapy alone is effective in improving knee functionality, challenging the conventional approach that typically relies on physical rehabilitation to achieve optimal outcomes.
