Abstract
Dear Editor, Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection is a common worldwide infection that is an important cause of many serious digestive system diseases. Moreover, H. pylori is ranked as a Class I carcinogen for gastric cancer by the World Health Organization. It is recommended that all patients with a positive test of active infection with H. pylori should be offered eradication treatment [1]. Functional dyspepsia (FD) is a chronic functional disorder characterized by epigastric pain, epigastric burning, postprandial fullness, or early satiety. Studies demonstrated that H. pylori eradication statistically affected FD symptoms [2]. The American College of Gastroenterology and the Canadian Association of Gastroenterology guidelines strongly recommended H. pylori eradication therapy in H. pylori-positive FD patients with high-quality evidence [3]. The article by Erin R. Shanahan et al., “Alterations to the duodenal microbiota are linked to gastric emptying and symptoms in FD” [4] investigated the relationship between the duodenal mucosa-associated microbiota, gastric emptying, and FD symptoms, highlighting the relative abundances of Prevotella, Streptococcus, and Fusobacterium spp. were discriminatory between the FD and control groups, and the relative abundance of Veillonella was negatively correlated with gastric emptying time. Akifumi Fukui et al. also reported that the increase of Streptococcus in the descending portion of the duodenum was positively related to upper gastrointestinal symptoms in FD [5]. These data indicated that duodenal microbiota is a potential contributing factor that correlated with the severity of symptoms in FD [6].
