Abstract
O Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS) no Brasil e o sistema de saúde canadense, conhecido como Medicare, são modelos que visam garantir o acesso universal à saúde, mas adotam abordagens distintas. Instituído pela Lei n.º 8.080/1990, o SUS opera com base nos princípios de universalidade, integralidade e equidade, buscando oferecer serviços gratuitos e abrangentes a toda a população. Por outro lado, o sistema canadense se estrutura em planos provinciais e territoriais descentralizados, regidos pelo Canada Health Act (1985), que assegura cobertura universal para serviços médicos essenciais, financiados por impostos gerais. Esse modelo elimina barreiras financeiras ao atendimento, mas enfrenta dificuldades como a escassez de profissionais e longas filas para procedimentos não urgentes. A comparação entre os sistemas revela diferenças marcantes, de forma que estudos indicam que a qualidade dos sistemas está relacionada à capacidade de atender de forma integrada e coordenada, destacando a importância de superar barreiras estruturais. A análise das experiências do Brasil e do Canadá permite identificar práticas que podem aprimorar as políticas de saúde, fortalecendo a equidade e a inclusão.
