En réponse aux appels de la Commission de vérité et réconciliation (2015) et de la Commission Viens (2019), et suivant les recommandations de l’ACFTS (2017), un projet pilote, né d’un partenariat étroit entre une communauté autochtone et un établissement universitaire, a offert à une cohorte d’étudiantes en travail social l’occasion de vivre une expérience d’immersion culturelle. L’expérience a pu être documentée par la réalisation de travaux réflexifs de la part des étudiantes, permettant un suivi de leur vécu et de leurs réflexions tout au long de l’expérience. L’expérience pédagogique a montré qu’elle permettait aux étudiantes d’amorcer leur chemin pour devenir de meilleures alliées des communautés autochtones. Les étudiantes se sont progressivement impliquées dans l’expérience pour en apprendre plus sur la culture, les réalités de la vie dans la communauté et sur les différentes façons de faire pour collaborer avec les Anicinabek. On peut considérer cette expérience comme une réussite partant du fait que seulement 10 des 14 étudiantes avaient mis les pieds dans la communauté malgré sa proximité avec l’Université. Toutes les participantes s’entendent pour dire que ce type d’expérience devrait être reconduit dans l’avenir pour permettre à plus de futures travailleuses sociales de devenir de meilleures alliées.
