Abstract
La présente étude s’intéresse à la qualité de l’environnement langagier en classe d’éducation préscolaire en matière de soutien au langage oral et à l’engagement des enfants au regard de leur communication avec l’enseignante et les pairs dans différents contextes d’apprentissage. Les personnes participantes incluent 23 enseignantes en maternelle 5 ans, 7 enseignantes en maternelle 4 ans et 150 enfants de leur classe. L’outil d’observation Early Language and Literacy Classroom Observation (Smith et al., 2008) a été utilisé pour évaluer l’environnement langagier. En outre, l’Individualized Classroom Assessment Scoring System (Downer et al., 2010) a permis d’évaluer l’engagement des enfants au regard de la communication avec l’enseignante et les pairs. Globalement, les résultats font état d’un niveau de qualité de base en ce qui a trait à l’environnement langagier, d’un niveau faible quant à la communication avec l’enseignante et faible-moyen quant à la communication avec les pairs, ce qui fait écho aux résultats d’études antérieures. En tenant compte des contextes d’apprentissage observés en classe, certaines recommandations sont présentées afin de rehausser la qualité des pratiques enseignantes en lien avec le langage oral, tout en contribuant à un niveau d’engagement plus élevé au regard de la communication avec l’enseignante et les pairs.
