Spontaneous resolution of nausea and vomiting in cyclic vomiting syndrome following repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation for treatment-resistant depression: A case report

Abstract
Cyclic vomiting syndrome (CVS) is a chronic disorder characterized by recurrent vomiting episodes, followed by periods of relief. CVS is hypothesized to be caused by genetic, neuroendocrine and environmental factors and is highly comorbid with psychiatric disorders like depression and anxiety. Diagnosis relies on clinical presentation, Rome IV criteria, and ruling out other conditions. Treatment includes lifestyle changes and medications. CVS can significantly impact patients and the healthcare system. We present a 62-year-old man known to have CVS and persistent depressive disorder that has not responded to antidepressants and psychotherapy. He received a course of bilateral sequential theta-burst stimulation (bsTBS) resulting in significant improvement in depression and anxiety. Following a relapse, he was offered another bsTBS course, with complete remission of depression. He reported spontaneous resolution of his CVS symptoms since the first bsTBS course. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of complete CVS resolution following bsTBS.
