Abstract
In this study, we set out to examine whether the subsistence harvesting and food security of First Nations households (N = 1,298) in the Peace River basin of British Columbia and Alberta are synchronized with life course transitions. Our results offer empirical verification that changes in household structure influence harvesting potential. While households from all age groups report being food insecure, the highest prevalence was found among households in the 20-29 and 60+ age groups, with 9% and 12% of households experiencing food insecurity. Common to all food insecure households was a larger than average household size, the absence of a hunter(s), limited wage-earning involvement, and general exclusion from food sharing networks. Whereas the scholarly value of this research rests in providing a substantive understanding of how life course transitions influence the food security of First Nations households, the applied contributions are realized by providing First Nations leaders with a more dynamic understanding of how food insecurity is experienced in their communities, which is allowing for targeted and age-specific interventions to be developed.
