La notion de « zoo humain », qui a connu un grand succès, apparaît problématique pour différentes raisons, à commencer par l’indistinction des processus d’animalisation qu’elle propose de rassembler. Or, la période coloniale, qui vit se multiplier les exhibitions ethnographiques, est aussi celle du développement d’analogies entre les femmes et les oiseaux d’autant plus nombreuses qu’elles renvoyaient à des pratiques bien concrètes d’utilisation des plumes dans la mode comme au music-hall et de construction de volières coloniales (présentant les oiseaux des colonies). Ce commerce des plumes et ce succès plus large des oiseaux exotiques sont eux aussi liés à l’expansion coloniale. À l’époque, la métaphore de la volière est largement mobilisée à propos des « danses exotiques ». La construction genrée de cet imaginaire ornithologique est observable aussi bien dans les expositions coloniales ou les sections coloniales des expositions universelles que dans la mode ou au music-hall. En proposant d’en étudier les raisons et les motifs et en décrivant des cas concrets de mise en image des rencontres entre oiseaux exotiques et corps féminins, allant jusqu’à des encagements spectaculaires (celui de Joséphine Baker notamment), cet article vise à souligner le caractère transversal de ces processus d’« ornithologisation », à l’intersection entre domination coloniale et rapports de genre.
