Malgré la fiabilité grandissante des modèles climatiques, un manque de perception holistique persiste en ce qui a trait aux conséquences des changements climatiques actuels et futurs sur les écosystèmes. Afin de combler le besoin de mieux anticiper les changements à venir, il est nécessaire d’amener les experts de diverses disciplines à mettre en commun leurs perceptions de ce que l’avenir plus chaud pourrait nous réserver. Ainsi, plusieurs ateliers de travail furent organisés au sein du Centre d’études nordiques (CEN), un regroupement stratégique des Fonds de recherche du Québec et l’un des plus anciens centres de recherche de la province. Les experts provenant de diverses disciplines des sciences naturelles (ex. biologie, écologie, géomorphologie, limnologie, télédétection) réunis autour d’une même table ont mis en place une structure leur permettant d’envisager, basé sur leurs connaissances des milieux froids, la rapidité avec laquelle les différentes composantes de l’environnement changeront avec un réchauffement de 5°C le long d’un gradient latitudinal d’environ 3000 km, du Québec boréal au Pôle Nord. Nos résultats suggèrent que la végétation est la composante dont l’influence est la plus marquée sur les autres, suivie de la disparition de la glace. C’est donc au rythme des changements de végétation et de la dégradation de la cryosphère que ces paysages se transformeront.
