Respecter la citoyenneté culturelle est l’une des vertus cardinales à promouvoir afin d’assurer l’exercice des droits culturels de l’individu, vu comme socle de la paix universelle. Pour ce faire, il convient d’interroger les frontières traditionnelles existant entre l’art et la société, en permettant ainsi d’approfondir la réflexion sur le rôle social de l’art (Berleant, 2022). À cette idée s’ajoute un autre élément majeur : la « disponibilité » citoyenne, soit la volonté de « donner du temps » à l’appréciation des pratiques artistiques actuelles, caractérisées par une nouveauté incessante. Il s’agit d’engager – dans un environnement où le rythme de vie est sans précédent – « l’investissement du récepteur », soit le fait de « mettre son énergie psychique dans l’activité de réception d’une œuvre d’art » (Everaert-Desmedt, 2012). Comment concilier alors ces préoccupations à une époque comme la nôtre marquée par le sentiment d’une accélération de plus en plus grande ? Pour tenter d’y répondre, cet article explore les fondements théoriques de « l’engagement esthétique » (Berleant, 2022), avant d’examiner les limites d’un tel engagement dans un contexte de « crise de temps » (Revault d’Allonnes, 2013), ainsi que la faculté de l’individu de « se donner du temps » (Adrianssens et Montjotin, 2024) comme une décision personnelle indispensable à l’avènement du « citoyen culturel ». Enfin, le texte tente d’éclaircir en quoi cette approche favorise des dynamiques sociétales, en mettant particulièrement l’accent sur ses implications éducatives.
