Abstract
Afval -tijdlozer, alledaagser en tegelijkertijd actueler kan haast niet.In onze dagelijkse omgang met de ons omringende omgeving worden we er voortdurend mee geconfronteerd; in het straatbeeld, bij ons huishouden, zelfs op ons lijf: we botsen voortdurend op afval, rommel, vuiligheid die we moeten verwijderen, opruimen, kuisen.Afval vormt een constante, alledaagse uitdaging die in onze tijd bovendien een globaal karakter heeft aangenomen: oog in oog met een naderende ecologische ramp moeten we ons niet enkel individueel leren verhouden tegenover het afval dat we in ons dagelijks leven produceren, maar vormt onze verhouding tot afval eveneens de grote collectieve uitdaging van onze tijd.Maar wat hebben die niveaus nu met elkaar te maken?Wat heeft mijn zorg over mijn ophaalkalender nu met oceaanverzuring te maken?Door onze alledaagse omgang "kennen" we afval, maar doorgaans slechts op een uiterst selectieve manier.We kennen het materiaal, terwijl de sociale, economische, politieke en culturele systemen die dat materiaal voortbrengen en hun stroom vormgeven, onzichtbaar blijven."Discard studies" is een interdisciplinair onderzoeksveld dat juist die achterliggende systemen van afval en afvalproductie als onderzoeksobject heeft (2).Het mengt daarbij empirisch onderzoek en specifieke casestudies met sociale theorie en filosofie gaande van Bruno Latour en "object oriented ontology" tot systeemtheorie en Foucaultiaanse machtsanalyses.Daarbij hopen de onderzoekers in dit veld een meer genuanceerde en kritische blik op onze hedendaagse afvalcrisis te kunnen werpen.Discard Studies heeft zijn oorsprong in een blog verbonden aan het Department of Geography aan de Memorial University of Newfoundland en het boek Discard Studies: Wasting, Systems, and Power van Max Liboiron en Josh Lepawsky is een poging die ongelofelijk rijke en belangwekkende blog te systematiseren tot één samenhangende tekst (viii).Hun bedoeling is daarbij echter niet om een soort synthese of inleiding van het veld te geven, 'rather, this book is an effort to provide readers with examples and skills to add nuance and intention to how we might wade into and alter systems of discard' (31).Dat is een bescheiden doel dat de eerder hachelijke onderneming een hoogst productieve blog van enkele jaren in een relatief korte tekst te systematiseren al een heel stuk minder bedenkelijk maakt.Het probleem is echter dat de auteurs dat bescheiden doel doorheen hun tekst zelf constant uit het oog lijken te verliezen: de voorbeelden en tools die ze aanreiken zijn op zichzelf erg waardevol, maar hun streven naar theorievorming en coherentie maakt van de gehele tekst een rommeltje.Toch is het volgens mij de moeite waard deze modder te doorploegen omdat er werkelijk enkele parels in te vinden zijn die ons een totaal andere en
