Creativity and collaboration: Reflecting on <i>China’s Van Goghs</i> (2016)

Abstract
China’s Van Goghs, a documentary by Yu Haibo and Kiki Yu, invites us to examine the creative practices and daily lives of the worker-painters in Dafen Oil Painting Village (Shenzhen, China). Their hand-made copies of Vincent van Gogh paintings raise significant theoretical and philosophical questions about Art and reproducibility in the twenty first century—including the persistence of aura making activities and their relation to folk art and kitsch. The essay also considers the collaboration between the filmmakers and their principal subject, Zhao Xiaoyong—posing critical questions about agency, authorship, and narrative control in documentary filmmaking. Inevitable tensions and consequences arise when the subject’s life’s story diverges from the storyline constructed by the filmmakers—one that conforms to the ‘From Made in China to Created in China’ mantra of the Chinese government. By reconsidering the problematics of collaboration and representation, this study fosters a deeper appreciation for the complex interplay between documentary storytelling and artistic practices.
