Abstract
Combining ethnographic reflections with a visual narrative, this photo essay explores how underprivileged young men mediate their masculinity through systems of patriarchy in Nepal. Tracing young male labourers working in the construction industry in Kathmandu, the photographer and co-authors reflect on complex questions of representation and viewer bias, exploring young Nepali masculinities with a focus on historically marginalised and equity seeking groups. Modelled on a paradigm of co-creation and respectful engagement with the representational goals of the research participants, this project invites readers and viewers to consider the many ways in which masculinity can be expressed, inviting a nuanced understanding of gender identity and its societal impacts in Nepal.
