Abstract
Plusieurs dimensions de la Grande Famine d’Irlande (1846-1851) – la dépendance à des ressources limitées et les pénuries alimentaires, les mesures prises par les gouvernements, les inégalités face au désastre, ou encore les migrations de la misère – résonnent avec les crises contemporaines et ont récemment fait l’objet d’un intérêt historiographique renouvelé. L’article propose une analyse de ces inflexions récentes, depuis le début du XXIe siècle, identifiables à deux échelles d’observation. La première est celle de l’actualisation des « grands récits » explicatifs (comment une telle catastrophe a-t-elle pu se produire dans l’arrière-cour de la première puissance mondiale ?), entre relectures néolibérales, approches postcoloniales et apports de l’histoire comparée des famines. La seconde est davantage microhistorique, centrée sur l’expérience de millions d’anonymes qui ont lutté pour leur survie. Sur les failles des grands discours, ce chantier d’histoire sociale replace les sans-voix au centre de la scène et éclaire, de sa lumière crue, l’ampleur de la dislocation sociale causée par la Grande Famine.
