Abstract
<title>Extract</title> Bronchiectasis is an abnormal, irreversible dilation of the bronchi. The term “bronchiectasis” was first introduced in the early 19th century [1]. Bronchiectasis symptoms vary but often include productive cough, breathlessness, fatigue and chest discomfort. The disease results from structural damage and inflammation, with microbial infections playing a key role in its onset and progression. Bacteria, fungi and viruses thrive in mucus-filled areas, causing recurrent infections and chronic inflammation, which worsen airway damage. Effective management focuses on infection control through pathogen-specific treatments, antibiotics and airway clearance techniques to disrupt this cycle and improve outcomes [2], rendering the lungs more susceptible to bacterial colonisation. The most commonly identified pathogens in the sputum of bronchiectasis patients are <italic>Haemophilus influenzae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa</italic> and nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM), including the <italic>Mycobacterium avium</italic> complex [3]. While <italic>P. aeruginosa</italic> can have severe clinical implications, <italic>H. influenzae</italic> tends to cause milder effects in some cases [3].
